Vermont weather is hard on wood. Freeze-thaw cycles, wet springs, humid summers - it all adds up. After a few years without a fresh coat of stain, most decks start showing their age pretty clearly. The wood goes gray, the grain opens up, and moisture starts working its way in.

This is a repeat client in Montpelier we've worked with before. They had us back out after about three years to sand and re-stain their deck, which is exactly the right window for this kind of maintenance. We sanded the surface down first to get rid of the weathered gray layer and open the wood back up before applying the stain. That prep step is what makes the difference between a finish that soaks in and lasts versus one that sits on top and peels.

The before and after here is pretty striking. The worn, silver-gray boards came back to life with a rich, deep brown tone that really pops against the white railings and siding. We stained the decking boards and the top rail caps too, so the whole thing looks cohesive rather than patchy.

Keeping up with deck maintenance every few years isn't just about looks - it's about protecting your investment. A deck that gets sanded and re-stained on a regular schedule will outlast one that gets ignored and then needs major repairs. Our wood staining and sealing work is designed to give the wood real protection, not just a cosmetic refresh.

If your deck is starting to look like a before photo, that's your sign. Regular upkeep is a lot cheaper than replacement, and the results speak for themselves.
